Mikaela Shiffrin to miss start of Alpine skiing World Cup season
Mikaela Shiffrin will miss the start of the Alpine Ski World Cup season for the first time since 2011 and will sit out next week in the giant slalom in Sölden, Austria, with a back injury.
"After improving my skiing last week, I was advised to sit outside in Sölden so my back can heal so I can ski for the rest of the season," was published on Shiffrin's social media on Friday. “After having started in Sölden for the last eight years in a row, it feels… really frustrating and strange (for lack of better words). Luckily this injury will heal and I'll be back soon. "
According to US Ski & Snowboard, Shiffrin plans to return to the US from Europe to rest and relax. The return to the competition is to be announced. The next planned World Cup event is a parallel giant slalom on November 13th in Austria.
Shiffrin, two-time Olympic gold medalist and three-time world champion, last drove on January 26th.
She missed the remainder of the shortened 2019-20 season following her father's death on Feb.2. She was traveling for a possible return to last season's final races in Sweden in March, but these have been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Shiffrin has been on the podium for five of the last six years in Sölden, including a win in 2014.
The then 17-year-old New Zealander Alice Robinson prevailed against Shiffrin in Sölden last year. Another top contender for the October 17th race is Italian Federica Brignone, who overtook Shiffrin in the overall standings during her absence last winter and won the title.
