Mira Sorvino knows a little about how to keep romance alive.
In this week's edition of PEOPLE, the Oscar winner and mother of four, 54, shares her secrets to maintaining a strong and loving relationship with her 17-year-old husband, Christopher Backus.
"Date night kids are absolutely essential when you have four kids because you spend so much time raising them," says Sorvino, who Mattea, 16, Johnny, 15, Holden, 12, and Lucia, 9, with Backus (9) shares "You are next to each other, but you are more related to your children than to each other. So we go to date nights where we leave the children with our trustworthy, wonderful, great nanny."
“We're going to a hotel somewhere,” she adds. “This is our ritual. We're going to say, 'Where are you going tonight?' We pick up the phone and we'll see, maybe we go to Pasadena, or maybe we go to downtown LA, or maybe we go to Beverly Hills or Venice Beach, or just somewhere out of our zone and just go to dinner ... so that we become a couple, not a couple with children, just for this moment. It's really important."

The couple married in the Santa Barbara Courthouse on June 11, 2004 after dating less than a year.
Sorvino and Backus are currently in Rome where the actress is filming an upcoming project, and she says the two still find time to be spontaneous together.
"We just had the greatest trip, almost like a honeymoon, while I was working," she says. "By giving you all that time to walk around town and visit the beautiful sights."
"We ran in the Borghese Gardens and we ran to a lake where they could rent row boats and then we stopped running and had a picnic. We went out on the row boats with a bag of sandwiches and brownies and it was just very nice, "she adds. “Just kind of cute and romantic. So I think it's important to do something that will keep your romance alive. "

While the two enjoy their time alone, they also enjoy all of the family time they can get.
"I try to have dinner with the family and it's not always possible every night because we come back so late from various activities and exercises," says Sorvino. “It's just a modern life. But one of the strangely good things about quarantine was that we spent a lot of time together as a family. "
"I think the kids lost their minds in the end," she says. "But I thought it was great that we could eat together and cook together."
