"The question here is not what we are doing in Mississippi, but what this president is trying to impose on the American worker," Reeves told CNN's Jake Tapper during an appearance on the State of the Union.
"The reality is this is a president's attack on hardworking Americans and hardworking Mississippi who are trying to choose between a stab in their arm and their ability to support their families," added Reeves.
The Biden government announced earlier this month that all federal employees, federal agency contractors, and employees of all health care facilities who receive federal funding from Medicare or Medicaid will need to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
The president also announced in September that all companies in the US with 100 or more employees would be required to require vaccinations for their employees or have them have weekly tests for COVID-19. The move affects 80 million American workers, as Insider previously reported.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 181 million Americans are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. About 54.5% of the entire US population are fully vaccinated against the disease, while 63.4% of Americans have been partially vaccinated against COVID-19.
In Mississippi, just over 1.2 million people have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 - about 41% of the state's population, according to the Mississippi Department of Health.
Reeves defended his COVID-19 containment strategy amid the spread of the Delta variant on Sunday after Tapper ascertained the per capita death rate in the state. The state has the worst per capita death rate in the United States, according to data analyzed by the New York Times. According to the data, about 310 out of 100,000 people in the state have died from COVID-19.
What President Biden is trying to do is save lives, ”said Tapper. We can have this discussion. We have already. But he's trying to save lives.
"I'm telling you your path is not working. And whether you say it is a lagging indicator or whatever your argument, Mississippi now, if it were its own country, has the second worst per capita death rate in the world. Behind Peru" , he said.
Reeves called the death dates a "lagging indicator" and said he had taken steps to fight the disease. According to the Times data, new cases of COVID-19 in Mississippi have declined 32% over the past 14 days, while deaths have increased 18%.
"Mississippi has seen a significant increase in the total number of Mississippi supporters who have received the vaccine," he said. "Our case numbers have dropped dramatically in the past two weeks."
