A team of cavers in Missouri rescued a missing dog during a routine caving project over the weekend.
The group discovered the pup, named Abby, deep in the Tom Moore cave system in Perry County on Saturday, Fox 2 reported.
Team member Rick Haley recalled the unexpected rescue on Facebook, writing that he and another caver worked together to bring the animal safely back to the surface.

"The dog wasn't in good shape," Haley said of what they found at first.
To save the dog and not endanger the rescue team, Abby was placed in a duffel bag with her head out.
"We took them 500 feet up a very tight, awkward, vertical climb and hand-in-hand led them up to the surface," recalled Haley. "She was totally cooperative."

After the rescue, the cavers contacted Biehle Deputy Fire Chief Robert Cahoon, who helped them go door-to-door in the area to locate Abby's owner, Fox 2 reported.
After the team reunited the dog with her family, the owner said the pet had been missing since June 9. It remains unclear when and how Abby got into the cave in the first place

KSL reported the animal was found in Berome Moore Cave, which is over 21 miles long and the second longest in Show Me State.
Although there is running water and fish and crustaceans in the cave, Abby was found in a place of total darkness, which would have made it difficult for her to find food or water, according to Fox 2, adding to the mystery of how she survived .
