Nearly 40 percent of Americans say Trump or Biden second term ‘worst thing that could happen’

A multitude of American voters think a second term as president would be “the worst thing that could happen” for either President Biden or former President Trump.
A Yahoo News-YouGov poll found that 37 percent of registered voters in both parties said Trump's re-election would be "the worst thing" for the country, and 35 percent thought the same if Biden ran again in 2024.

Given the scale of five other options - uncertain, "best that could happen", "mostly good", "mixture of good and bad", "mostly bad" - to name the potential gains of the second term, decided most respondents for the pessimistic extreme.
85 percent of Democrats and 25 percent of Republicans oppose a Trump bid in 2024, compared to 43 percent of Democrats and 84 percent of Republicans who oppose Biden.
About three-quarters of Democrats thought Trump's re-election would be "the worst thing," while about three-quarters of Republicans thought Biden's re-election would be the same.
If the 2024 election were held today in a 2020 rerun, 41 percent of voters say they would support Biden and 39 percent say they would support Trump.
In a hypothetical case in which Biden stepped aside, just 30 percent of Democrats or Democrat-leaning independents said they want Vice President Harris to step up, while 52 percent of voters said they would want that instead someone else becomes the Democratic nominee.
About a third of Republican-leaning Republicans and independents said they would rather see Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as the Republican nominee, while 44 percent supported Trump.
Performed from July 28th to August 8th. Jan. 1, the poll surveyed 1,557 U.S. adults, weighted by gender, age, race, education, and the 2020 presidential election. The margin of error is 2.7 points.
