Neil Patrick Harris apologizes for mocking Amy Winehouse shortly after her death.
A resurfaced image from the How I Met Your Mother star's 2011 Halloween party - which featured a meat platter inspired by the "Rehab" singer's corpse - has sparked controversy, leading to the Actor publicly apologized.
"Recently, a photo surfaced of a Halloween party my husband [David Burtka] and I threw 11 years ago," Harris said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly. “It was unfortunate then and it still is today.
A picture of the dish can be seen here, but - warning - it's graphic.
The British singer had a very public battle with addiction — during a time when entertainment news was particularly toxic and she was openly derided on blogs — before she died of alcohol poisoning on July 23, 2011. She was just 27 years old.
Three months later, Harris - who is known for big Halloween celebrations - threw Burtka at a party that included a very graphic buffet platter that looked like "The Corpse of Amy Winehouse" with the ingredients listed as "Beef Ribs, Pulled Pork, Chicken." listed were bratwurst in spicy BBQ sauce." Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson and husband Justin Mikita were guests, and Justin shared a photo of the dish on social media before deleting it.
Harris didn't bring it up at the time, and the topic faded — until recently. Over 10 years later, a photo of the party dish resurfaced on social media, and new audiences were made aware of Harris' previous choice. It's also led to other things Harris doing being resurfaced and reanalyzed, including shadowing Rachel Bloom in 2018. And now it's led to his apology, too.
