New Twist: Arrest Made in Alex Murdaugh Shooting
The legal drama of a prominent South Carolina family took a new turn on Tuesday when police arrested a suspect in connection with the mysterious shooting of troubled attorney Alex Murdaugh.
A law enforcement source with knowledge of the situation confirmed to The Daily Beast that a suspect was in custody, although neither name nor details were immediately released. The development was first reported by WJBF.
Murdaugh was at the center of a bizarre saga with more twists and turns than a Lowcountry back road. It includes double homicide, drug addiction, and allegations of embezzlement.
The 53-year-old lawyer is the offspring of a powerful legal dynasty and was a partner in the law firm Peters, Murdaugh, Parker, Eltzroth, Detrick founded by his great-grandfather.
In 2019, the clan, which for decades controlled the local prosecutor, hit the headlines when Murdaugh's son Paul was charged with a drunken boating accident that killed a young woman.

Then, in June, Alex Murdaugh spotted Paul Murdaugh, 22, and his mother Maggie, 52, who were shot and killed near the kennels on the family's extensive hunting estate.
With the double homicide unresolved, Alex Murdaugh's life seems to have gotten out of hand.
Two weeks ago he called 911 from a country road to report that he had been shot in the head while changing a tire. Circumstances were shrouded in confusion - and then it got even darker.

Murdaugh suddenly announced that he was going to rehab and resign from his law firm for drug addiction, saying he had "made many decisions that I genuinely regret".
This intriguing statement was followed by the company's announcement that Murdaugh was being investigated for alleged embezzlement of funds - a matter that the state police are also investigating.
