Newsom predicts ‘profound consequences’ for Democrats nationwide if he loses recall election

California Governor Gavin Newsom claimed Thursday that his Democrats underestimated the importance of his removal to them.
Newsom said his fate and that of his party are one and warns of the ramifications that the Republicans could face the Democrats for "many, many years" if he loses in September.
"I don't think the National Democratic Party is asking that question," Newsom told a group of journalists from the California newspapers owned by McClatchy. "If this were a successful recall, I believe it would have profound consequences nationwide and go not just into politics, but politics and policymaking as well."
Newsom used the term "guns" to describe how Republicans elsewhere might try to use the process to overthrow the Democrats, and he also said a loss of the GOP in the 2022 midterm elections could benefit the GOP.
California Republicans are working hard to remove Newsom, a burgeoning liberal and national fixture of democratic politics, as governor of the country's largest state, with the September 14 election recalled.
Newsom's opponents used the state's relatively strict pandemic policies and allegations that he had not done enough to contain crime in the campaign against him, a strategy he reprimanded on Thursday.
“Don't confuse me with the Defund the Police movement,” he said, adding that while he supports the police reform, “I'm not one of those people who think you're going to break the window or a grandma knock over and somehow “hit the wrist. I won't buy that. "
Among the Republicans challenging him are former Olympic decathlete and reality TV star Caitlyn Jenner, former gubernatorial candidate John Cox, San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, and talk radio host Larry Elder.
At least some key national Democrats recognize the importance of Newsom winning the recall elections. Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren recently starred in an ad calling for Californians to vote for him and blaming "Trump Republicans" for the recall.
Vice President Kamala Harris, a native of California, also promised to promote Newsom, who will run for re-election in 2022 if he wins.
