Newt Gingrich Makes Bonkers Claim About Trump's COVID-19 Pandemic Response

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich wrote a comment in the Washington Times this week saying he would not accept President-elect Joe Biden as president and packed the essay with unsubstantiated allegations of electoral fraud.
Even more outrageous, however, was the fact that President Donald Trump followed science to respond to the coronavirus pandemic.
Gingrich, now a right-wing media personality, wrote that "the elite liberal media ... blamed President Trump for the global pandemic when he did literally everything top scientists directed."
In reality, Trump and his administration falsely downplayed the scientist-presented threat from the virus, despite the fact that the president knew early on that it was deadly. He pushed for unproven and dangerous treatments and tried to get White House coronavirus task force member Dr. Anthony Fauci, to discredit. He advocated a speedy reopening of the country and opposed the scientists' requests for caution. And he mocked research-based safety guidelines like social distancing and mask-wearing.
He also tried to stir up fear in his base by warning in October that his opponent at the time, Biden, "will listen to the scientists". As if that were dangerous.

Since his election defeat, Trump has largely ignored the rising number of pandemics.
While Biden has given the Trump administration some credit for speeding up vaccine development, US deaths have now risen to 323,000 as COVID-19 patients marginalized hospitals. A full vaccine rollout may still be months away.
As for Biden's decisive victory, Gingrich has once again taken liberties with reality.
"I also have no interest in pretending that the current result is legitimate or honorable," wrote Gingrich, whose article was retweeted by Trump. “It is simply the final blow in a four year takeover by the establishment and the media. It was committed by people who break the law, betrayed the information land, and smeared those of us who believe in America over China, the story over revisionism, and the liberal ideal of free speech over the culture of demolition. "
He added, “I am writing this with real sorrow because I think we are facing a serious, bitter struggle in America. This extraordinary, coordinated four-year takeover threatens the structure of our country and the freedom of every American. "
