Nick Cannon had wanted to work as an entertainer since childhood, as Shel Silverstein's crazy poems and Judy Blume's stories stimulated his imagination. But he never wanted to be famous.
"I am not one of those people who have fans - this fantastic kind of fanemonium," Cannon said. “There can be people who are fans of my career or certain projects. But I have no fans. I never wanted it to be that level of admiration. "

Cannon took a first-hand look at the high price of fame during his marriage to pop superstar Mariah Carey. The two surprised friends and family members by closing the knot in April 2008 after weeks of advertising. They separated in 2014 and officially divorced in 2016. The couple are still connected as devoted parents to 9-year-old twins, daughter Monroe and son of Moroccans.
From the start, Cannon knew that Carey would always be in the spotlight. So he also focused on building his career, Cannon understood that his role in her orbit would be carefully prohibited.
"I've always said it works so well because it's a healthy balance," he said. "I had no problem falling behind. It was never a competition with me. It was like "I'll turn mine off so she can turn on hers." "I felt comfortable in myself and who I was."
Friends and colleagues say that Cannon's commitment to Carey and respect for the demands of her career were evident in the years they were together.
"When she was around, he knew that it always had to be about her," said a long-time business partner. "He made it incredibly elegant."
Cannon said he and Carey had made a leap of trust in the marriage, but were also realistic about the nature of the relationship.
"I don't remember that we ever had any arguments and the negative energy of" This doesn't work "and all that stuff was there. We had very reasonable conversations," Cannon said.
By the time they met, they had both had many ups and downs in romantic relationships, so they were approaching the prospect of an unusual coupling.
"We were both in a place where relationships are not our thing, but we like each other," Cannon recalls. "We discussed everything. What if this and what if that? We talked about how much fun it would be if we only got three weeks to get to know each other. It was more than the quirky fantasy idea to have as much fun as possible, and if it no longer feels like fun, if it feels like a task and a job, we should be able to continue amicably. "
When the twins were born in 2011, it made everything "more amazing," Cannon said. Although the relationship ended a few years later, the need to be there for their children has kept Cannon and Carey together.
“We just said: 'Let's live together to improve our children. 'We do everything we can to ensure that their education is as healthy as possible and that we are as healthy as possible. And we are still here today, ”he said.
Cannon emphasized that the question of whose star rises or falls is neither a source of voltage for them nor a factor in their division.
“My ego outside the house was great, but it was healthy in the house. I was there to support everything she wanted to do, ”he said. "I mean, it's Mariah Carey. How should I be? She's one of the most talented women on the planet. I can't hold a candle to this woman."
