Nine People Shot in Minneapolis as Post-Riot Unrest Continues

Nine people were shot dead in Minneapolis in the midst of a flood of violence after George Floyd's death, the Star Tribune reported.
The city shootings have increased sharply over three weeks of riots after an African American, Floyd, was killed by Minneapolis police officers. Since May 26, 66 people have been shot in the city, accounting for 45 percent of all shooting victims in Minneapolis this year.

No arrests were made in the recent shootings.
It does not seem that the shootings are linked to protests against Floyd's death. These protests became violent in some cases, and rioters set fire to the third Minneapolis police station and numerous companies.
The Minneapolis City Council has estimated that the damage to buildings from the riots will be at least $ 55 million. However, the council warned that the damage could be much higher, and Mayor Jacob Frey said the damage could reach "hundreds of millions of dollars".
Floyd's death has led Black Lives Matter activists to call police departments. Representative Ilhan Omar (D., Minn.), To whose Minneapolis district belongs, has supported calls to defuse the police in Minneapolis and described the department as "irreparable". Mayor Frey has opposed the move to dismantle the city's police department, despite the Minneapolis City Council signing a commitment to dismantle the department.
