North Carolina sheriff no longer identifies with Democrats and plans to retire

The Gaston County, North Carolina sheriff announced Wednesday that he would not stand for re-election and cited disagreements with the Democratic Party.
Alan Cloninger served as sheriff for 16 years and was a member of the Democratic Party until recently.
"This was one of the toughest decisions of my life," said Cloninger.
“But it is time I had to put my family first. Today I announce that I will retire as your sheriff at the end of this term, ”he continued.

Cloninger has served as a Democrat in a predominantly Conservative county for over a decade, but said the current political situation law enforcement agencies are facing has gotten too much for him.
"The current Democratic Party has left me," said Cloninger. “There is no home for a Conservative Democrat in today's Democratic Party. Therefore, today I am going to change my party affiliation from Democrats to non-party voters. "
"Some of the new Democrats in Washington are attacking and demoting all police officers who risk their lives every day to protect people," added Cloninger.
Cloninger said his decision to register as independent was a statement that the Democratic Party had left him. He stressed that his new status would enable him to vote for good candidates on both sides of the aisle.
Missouri Democratic MP Cori Bush hit the headlines Thursday after calling for the police to have their funds withdrawn despite defending their own use of private security services.
