NYPD Is Hunting An Attacker Who Hit An Asian Woman With A Hammer For Wearing A Mask
The New York Police Department's Hate Crimes Task Force has sought help from the public who viciously struck an Asian woman in the head with a hammer after the attacker requested that she and her friend remove their face masks .
Investigators released a disturbing video of the confrontation on Sunday in Midtown Manhattan when the attacker, who appeared to be a woman dressed in black, requested that the two Asian pedestrians remove their masks.
"She was talking to herself ... I thought she might be drunk or something, so we just wanted to overtake her quickly," the 31-year-old victim, identified only as Theresa, told ABC-TV Channel 7 on New York.
"When I passed her, she saw us and said," Take off your royal mask, "which is shocking. All of a sudden I felt my head get hit by something."
Theresa was taken to a hospital where, according to ABC, she needed stitches for a cut in the forehead and another cut on the head.
"My mom actually told me, 'Please be careful, there's a lot of Asian crime going on in America," said Theresa. The youngest graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan plans to return to Taiwan now, and if the right job comes, she will go after Return to New York when it is safer.
According to a recent study, hate crimes in Asia in the country's largest cities rose 150% year over year in the past year after former President Donald Trump repeatedly blamed the Chinese for COVID-19 and labeled the pandemic a "Chinese virus" had "kung flu."
The problem was particularly pronounced in New York City, where 28 anti-Asian hate crimes were recorded in 2020, compared to just three in 2019.
In March, an elderly Asian woman was thrown to the ground and repeatedly kicked by a male passerby who arched his bow at her in front of a Manhattan apartment building. The attack was captured on a surveillance camera, which also showed building personnel watching the attack and closing the door instead of intervening.
