Ohtani homers, wins to match Ruth as Angels top A's 5-1

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Shohei Ohtani weathered another injury scare and threw six scoreless innings to go on with his team-leading 25th home run and achieved another monumental milestone as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Oakland Athletics 5-1 on Tuesday night .
The two-time Japanese star joined Babe Ruth (1918) as the only player in major league history to have at least 10 home runs and 10 wins in the same season. According to the Angels, two players from the Negro Leagues also did: Bullet Rogan of the 1922 Kansas City Monarchs and Ed Rile of the 1927 Detroit Stars.
Ohtani singled and scored on Taylor Ward's triple homer in the fifth, then connected for a commanding Sam Selman drive that led off the seventh as a crowd of Red Clan fans seated behind the Angels dugout roared.
On the mound, Ohtani (10-7) was mostly crisp. He had five strikeouts, allowed four hits and retired seven of his last eight batters.
The reigning AL MVP almost didn't make it past third place.
Two days after receiving a blow to the left foot after colliding with Mariners pitcher Marco Gonzalez near the circle on deck, Ohtani was hit by an 87-mile drive from Ramón Laureano near the same area .
After making the game for the finals from the inning, Ohtani flexed his hip in apparent discomfort and then slowly hobbled off the field. He returned to the field moments later to test his leg and stayed in the game.
Ward's home run against James Kaprielian (3-6) was his 15th.
Steven Duggar, who called for waivers from Texas on Sunday, tripled and scored for Los Angeles. The Angels are 5-1 at the Coliseum this season.
Chad Pinder homered for the A's.
Kaprieelian allowed four runs (three earned) in five innings.
Angels: Mike Trout teed off this week and could start batting practice soon. The racquet has not played since July 12 due to a chest infection.
Athletics: RHP Brent Honeywell will play two innings of a simulated game in Arizona later this week and could start a rehab assignment at Low-A Stockton after that. Honeywell hasn't pitched since his right elbow stress reaction in spring training.
Struggling All-Star RHP Paul Blackburn (7-6, 4.28 ERA) beats Wednesday afternoon's series finale for Oakland. Blackburn has one win over his previous eight starts. The Angels had not announced a starter.
