On this day in sport: Brazil make World Cup history, LeBron's wait comes to an end
June 21 is a date that Brazilian football fans will fondly remember.
The Estadio Azteca hosted World Cup history 50 years ago when the Jules Rimet Trophy was last raised.
LeBron James will also be happy to look back on the date, the NBA star finally climbs the ladder and raises the Larry O'Brien Trophy.
Here we look back on some memorable moments from that day in sports.
1965 - The player completes the sentence
Gary Player won nine major titles in a brilliant career, but perhaps the cutest of them all came at the 1965 US Open.
The South African took the lead in the second round at Bellerive, but let a two-stroke advantage slip into the finals.
He was forced into an 18-hole play-off with Kel Nagle on Monday, but Player built up a five-stroke lead after eight holes and scored a remarkable victory, claiming his place in history.
The player followed Gene Sarazen and Ben Hogan at the completion of the career grand slam. Jack Nicklaus would do the feat a year later.
1970 - Brazil writes World Cup history
Pele and Brazil had a miserable experience at the 1966 World Cup when they left the group stage competition.
However, they left that behind in Mexico four years later in a spectacular way.
In just one game, a 1-0 triumph over defending champions England in the group stage, they failed at least three times while the Selecao separated Italy in the final.
Pele opened the scoring and after Roberto Boninsegna equalized for the Azzurri, Gerson, Jairzinho and Carlos Alberto scored a goal in the second half. Brazil was the first team to win the World Cup three times and win the Jules Rimet Trophy when it was replaced for the 1974 tournament.
1975 - Windies win because Thomson & Lillee miss out
Captain Clive Lloyd set a good example when the West Indies won the first cricket World Cup - the first international tournament with limited overshoots - at Lord's against Australia.
It was a competition that provided an exciting finale when Australia tried to chase the 291-8 of the Windies after Lloyd had made 102 out of only 85 deliveries.
The match seemed to be won when Australia was reduced to 233-9, but Jeff Thomson and Dennis Lillee gave them hope with an unlikely partnership with the 10th wicket.
Thomson and Lillee moored 41 until Deryck Murray wiped out the former to secure fame for the West Indies.
2003 - Lewis logs off in style
After consolidating his legacy by strengthening his victory over Evander Holyfield by defeating Mike Tyson in 2002, Lennox Lewis ended his boxing career by defeating Vitali Klitschko.
The third round turned out to be key because an impressive Klitschko suffered a cut in the right eye, which resulted in the fight being ended after the sixth. Lewis won the TKO victory.
Klitschko took over 60 stitches, but his performance led to a rematch. Despite initial negotiations, Lewis retired in February 2004 with a record 41-2-1.
Heavyweight fame would come for Klitschko, who was never defeated again and won the WBC title twice.
2012 - LeBron's wait is over
LeBron James suffered a heartache in his first two NBA finals, losing to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2007 and the Miami Heat in 2011 when they were defeated by the Dallas Mavericks.
However, it was a third stroke of luck for LeBron when the heat made up for her disappointment in 2011 a year later.
Miami's super team, led by three great James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, proved too much for a squad in Oklahoma City Thunder with a young triumvirate of Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and James Harden.
The Heat scored a 4-1 win that ended in a 121:10 win, with James scoring 26 points. It was a double celebration for LeBron, who was named Finals MVP after an average of 28.6 points in the series.
