Just days after Ontario was home, Dr. David Williams, Ontario's chief medical officer for health, said the province, as a "ballpark," sees 1,000 new COVID-19 cases or fewer a day or less.
“When you know the different numbers and percentages that are typically hospitalized, our current second wave rates, and how many of those end up in intensive care, you get a general feeling that you have to be down somewhere about or less than a thousand new cases a day, ”said Dr. Williams.
Ontario reported 2,578 new COVID-19 cases on Monday. Cases were regularly below 1,000 per day in October 2020, with an increase to 1,042 on October 25 and again above 1,000 on October 31 at 1,015 cases. On November 6, 2020, COVID-19 cases began to rise, consistently above 1,000, and escalated to a high of 4,249 cases on January 8.
Dr. Williams also said there must be fewer than 150 COVID-19 patients in hospital intensive care units. There are currently 1,571 people living with COVID-19 in Ontario hospitals, including 394 in intensive care units. Ontario first exceeded 150 people with COVID-19 in intensive care units on November 23, 2020.
"It's attainable, we can go back there," said Dr. Williams, stressing that hospitalizations and intensive care admissions are lagging behind the newly identified cases.
