Pritzker says youth sports will be back eventually, but now the risks are too great
Parents are suing the governor of Illinois for canceling winter sports.
Governor J. B. Pritzker and the Illinois High School Association are facing a lawsuit for cancellation of winter sports. Four parents of Illinois high school athletes filed the lawsuit in La Salle County Court on Monday, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Public Health announced in October that winter sports such as basketball, low and high risk sports will be suspended and resumed in the spring.

"Professional and university sports have significant resources to protect their players," Pritzker replied to the lawsuit on Wednesday. "To create social distance, for example by having multiple locker rooms ... by making sure they have plexiglass everywhere to separate the players ... to test them out much more regularly than a single high school or district could afford." . So there is a difference. "
The suit is designed to prevent Pritzker and IHSA from canceling the sports season. The annulment suit was "an unconstitutional violation of plaintiffs' right to equal protection under the Illinois Constitution".

Trevor Till's mother Lisa Moore stars in the suit. Till committed suicide in October and it was reportedly due to isolation due to COVID-19 restrictions. He was a freshman at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, per Chicago 5.
According to the lawsuit, "Trevor was devastated that he didn't have his season last year and his pole vault season. The final blow was when winter sports were canceled. Trevor committed suicide on October 21, 2020, an immediate cause of which was that Governor Pritzker's restrictions on high school sports programs. "
But Pritzker says that the cancellation of youth sport won't last forever.

"We're not saying these sports are not played," said Pritzker in October. “We are delaying playing these sports. We say, do training, get in shape. Even in high risk sports, there are things you can do. It's not like we're stopping the sport. But these are all being postponed until spring in the hopes that we will see effective vaccines and treatments. "
IHSA has not yet commented on the suit.
