Thanks to a recently announced second agreement with the US government, the Pfizer team is even more confident of achieving some impressive vaccination numbers by the middle of next year.
On Wednesday, Pfizer and BioNTech announced that the US government had agreed to purchase an additional 100 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. This deal brings the total number of cans currently designated for delivery to the United States to 200 million. The government will pay $ 1.95 billion for the newly announced second wave of 100 million doses.
"Securing more cans from Pfizer and BioNTech for delivery in the second quarter of 2021 will further expand our offering of cans across Operation Warp Speed's portfolio," said Alex Azar, secretary of the US Department of Health and Human Services, in a press release. "This new federal government purchase may give Americans even more confidence that we have enough supplies to vaccinate any American who wants by June 2021."
At least 70 million of the additional doses are expected to be dispensed by June 30, 2021. The remaining 30 million are due by July 31 at the latest.
The vaccine in question previously received an FDA award for emergency use. As we approach a new year, cautious optimism has accompanied the introduction of vaccines around the world. And here in the USA we will close 2020 with consistently worrying COVID-19 case numbers.
2020 will be the deadliest year in US history, according to the CDC.
