Photographing Lebanon's age-old abandoned houses
"All the beauty that surrounds us is like stepping back in time and trying to imagine what was there before."
The centuries-old abandoned mansions in Lebanon - like this one - have fallen into disrepair.
But British photographer James Kerwin still sees its charm and grandeur in the building's tall but cracked windows, etched ceilings, and withered roofs.
"Even without the furniture, you could imagine that it was a beautiful house, beautiful features, furnishings, all of this."
He has been roaming Lebanon for days and conquering traditional old houses from north to south.
This mansion is located in one of the ancient quarters of Beirut.
"So now we are in the Basta district of Beirut and it is an amazing old house that we are in, one of the most destroyed houses that I think I have ever photographed, my first location here in Lebanon. Stunning kind of house, also lots of details, especially in the ceiling areas, different bedrooms and rooms, and the main hall room which is typical of what you would see in Lebanon, triple arcades, beautiful ceilings, colors and that's exactly what i love shooting. "
Kerwim previously captured ruins in various locations, including countries in the former Soviet Union, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia.
He hopes to publish a book about the abandoned traditional houses of Lebanon soon.
Though abandoned for years, many of the old buildings in Beirut are now attracting attention after countless homes and buildings were destroyed in an explosion last year.
"Because of the focus on architecture for the past year, just under a year, because of what happened in Beirut, people are currently choosing architecture in this country, and I think that's a really positive thing. I think it is is a step forward that could help Lebanon // It would be great if some of them weren't in this condition or even turned some of the best into an open house to keep them from the point they were are no longer dangerous and people see or can see them, maybe a kind of museum.
