Player reportedly arrested after fight during Korn Ferry Tour Monday qualifier
You don't see that every day.
In the middle of qualifying for the Korn Ferry Tour's Wichita Open, a fight broke out on Monday at the Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton, Kansas.
The actors involved are not yet known.
The tour released the following statement to Golfweek: “The Korn Ferry Tour is aware of the incident that occurred at today's qualifier in Newton, Kansas. The individuals involved are not current Korn Ferry Tour members. We are in the process of collecting more details and have no further comments at this time. "
Ryan French of the Firepit Collective - you know him on Twitter as @ acaseofthegolf1 - was the first to cover the altercation and arrest early Monday afternoon. According to French, the argument arose because one player confronted another in the group for not helping maintain the pin or looking for possibly lost golf balls. The player who was confronted for not helping got angry, beat the other player who confronted him, and was then arrested after calling the police.
A source who played in the qualification spoke on condition of anonymity and confirmed the reason for the fight to Golfweek.
Four players didn't finish qualifying: Todd Shomler (WD), Luke Smith (DQ), Rio Hovel (NC) and Zander Winston (WD).
Derek Fribbs, the third player in the group who wasn't involved in the fight, finished the day 7- over 79.
