Police: Van carrying 80 dogs overturns on Virginia highway

SALEM, VA. (AP) - An 80 dog van that overturned on a Virginia freeway resulted in some of the animals being injured and others escaping from the vehicle, according to police.
The crash occurred early Sunday on Interstate 81 in Roanoke County, Virginia State Police Sgt. Rick Garletts said. It is unclear how many of the animals were injured or how many escaped.
Garletts told the Roanoke Times it was also unclear who owned the vehicle or where it was going. But the Fort Lewis Fire Department said in a Facebook post on Sunday that the van belonged to a rescue group that transported the dogs to other rescue groups.
Roanoke County Animal Control is helping with housing the animals.
