Ports shut as UK cut off from Europe
France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Ireland, Belgium, Israel and Canada were among those who cut travel ties after Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned that a highly contagious new strain of the virus posed a threat to the country.
Johnson will hold an emergency meeting later Monday to discuss international travel, particularly the flow of goods to and from the UK.
France closed its border to the arrival of people and trucks from the UK and closed one of the main trade routes with mainland Europe, a step transport minister, Grant Shapps, said surprisingly.
French Transport Minister Jean-Baptiste Djebbari later said his government intends to put Europe-wide sanitary protocol measures in place "in the next few hours" to enable traffic to resume with the UK.
As families and truckers tried to bypass travel bans to get home in time for Christmas, Sainsbury's, the UK's second largest supermarket chain, said gaps will appear on shelves within days if transport links with mainland Europe are not quickly restored will.
