Potential Mets free agent target J.T. Realmuto looking for 'record-shattering contract' this offseason: report
J.T. Realmuto yells as he searches for Phillies
Spending on this off-season MLB is a hot topic as the coronavirus pandemic may have less aggressive teams in the market. But J.T. Realmuto is a player that multiple teams will be looking at once the World Series is over.
The Mets, who are expected to be in new ownership with Steve Cohen pending MLB approval, are one of the frontrunners in landing the player who has injured them elsewhere in the NL-East since joining the Miami Marlins entered the league. And while New York is one of the more aggressive teams in the free agency, what exactly are they willing to pay for Realmuto's services over the next season?
Well, MLB.com Phillies reporter Todd Zolecki hears that Realmuto could land a mega-deal in the range of $ 200 million.
"Realmuto has a record catcher deal in mind, perhaps in the $ 200 million range," wrote Zolecki.
If Realmuto got that deal, he would easily outperform Buster Posey's extension with the San Francisco Giants, which brings him $ 21.4 million a season. But Realmuto is arguably the best catcher in MLB, so he's definitely looking for a deal that would prove that. Its stock could also lose that price tag to get the market high to start things off.
The Mets will be in the catcher market and a real bidding war could break out if they are determined to have Realmuto wear blue and orange for the next season. But when is that price too high to cope with? That is the real question when the oven gets hot.
The Mets have a $ 1.5 million buyout club option that will likely be exercised for C Wilson Ramos, who will otherwise earn $ 10 million over the next season. Ramos was offensively solid in his first year with the Mets in 2019, but his chemistry with the starting rotation, particularly in the case of Noah Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom, hasn't been good.
Realmuto is known as a solid defensive catcher and is also a battering bat. His career slash line is .278 / .328 / .455 with 95 homers and 358 RBI. That shortened season, he had 11 homers averaging .266 and 32 RBI over 47 games.
