A Catholic priest in Italy was arrested on charges of stealing over $ 100,000 from his ward, which he then used to fund drug-fueled gay sex parties with his roommate.
Father Francesco Spagnesi, 40, was placed under house arrest after authorities received notice that his roommate was buying and importing the rape drug GHB, which they then sold to guests at his sex parties. According to Corriere, Spagnesi is said to have confessed to his lawyers and promised to make full reparation to the parishioners he had fallen victim to.
“So much pain,” said Bishop Giovanni Nerbini in a video message to parishioners at the proclamation in Castellina after the news of Spagnesi's arrest earlier this month.
Nerbini said church leaders became suspicious last spring about financial transfers from the church coffers to Spagnesi. When confronting the popular priest, Nerbini said, "I was told that it was helping people in need in the community."
In the course of internal investigations, however, he was forced to release Spagnesi from his spiritual and fiduciary duties in the parish. He then granted the priest a year-long sabbatical.
"In my heart I wanted to save the person," said Nerbini.
According to La Nazione, Spagnesi had a troubled past and had become a drug addict about two years ago. They also reported that the Spagnesi had been sexually and romantically involved with a childhood friend for the past seven years.
Police became involved after Spagnesi's roommate was in possession of various amounts of drugs. Prosecutors alleged he bought the drugs both online in the Netherlands and from local dealers, and the drugs were then sold to gay men who attended their private group sex parties, which were also arranged online. According to TV Prato, the investigators assume that up to 200 men could have been involved in these parties.
One of Spagnesi's attorneys, Costanza Malerba, said her client confessed to the crimes and wanted to make full reparation to his injured parishioners.
In 2017, the Catholic Church learned of drug-fueled orgies that were taking place in the apartments of a senior aide in the Vatican itself. Allegedly, the Vatican police received complaints from neighbors about loud noises coming from the secretary's residence. The police are said to have entered the apartment to find men who were involved in sexual activities and drugs.
