In making the decision to move away from the royal family, he said it "never went away, it was more of a step backwards than a resignation".
He added that it was "a really difficult environment" and criticized the press saying it was "damaging my sanity".
Harry said he had to move his family away but insisted, "I will never go, I will always contribute. My life is a public service."
Archie's first word and the Queen's Christmas present
The Duke of Sussex spoke about family life during a conversation with James Corden and revealed that son Archie's first word was "crocodile" and the Queen gave the one-year-old a waffle iron for Christmas.
Harry responded to the controversy over The Crown's portrayal of his family's history and defended Netflix's royal drama.
He said both the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh could use Zoom and see Archie "walking around" California.
In a section for The Late Late Show that was filmed before he and the Duchess of Sussex confirmed they will not be returning as working members of the royal family, Harry accompanied TV host Corden on a double-decker bus tour of Los Angeles.

The Duke also spoke about his early relationship with Meghan, 39.
He said dating for him or a member of the royal family was "turned upside down" and told Corden that early dates are at home and that they only venture out in public if they are a couple.
"We have to spend an enormous amount of time just for the two of us," he said of his early relationship with Meghan. "There were no distractions and that was great, it was an amazing thing. We went from zero to 60 in the first two months."
When asked what a "normal night" looks like for the couple, Harry said they could make Archie's tea, give him a bath, and read him a book before he and Meghan hang out.
He said they could watch the Jeopardy game show! or something on Netflix.
Harry wants Damien Lewis to play him in The Crown
When asked what he thought of The Crown, Harry replied, "They don't pretend to be news, it's fictional, but it's loosely based on the truth.
"Of course it's not exact, but it does give you a rough idea of what this lifestyle is, the pressures it has to put duty and service above family, and everything else that can come of it.
"I feel much more comfortable with The Crown than with the stories that have been written about my family, my wife, or myself."
He said the crown was "obviously fiction" while he had a "real problem" with some of the stories written about it.
Harry joked that he wanted home star Damian Lewis to play him.

After Corden told him to pay the fare before jumping on the bus, Harry quipped, "You know us royals, we don't have any cash with us."
Corden served him afternoon tea while pointing out celebrity homes including Friends star David Schwimmer and Die Hard actor Bruce Willis.
During a visit to the house that starred in the 1990s sitcom The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air, Harry rapped the famous theme song, which was originally performed by Will Smith.
Corden tried to convince him to buy the sprawling mansion before Harry went into the bathroom.
"Haz" and I have moved enough, says Meghan
The couple then called Meghan on video, who, at Corden's suggestion to buy the house, joked, "I think we've moved enough."
She then asked "Haz" how his tour of Los Angeles was going and he said Corden was "the worst tour guide in LA".
Harry and a reluctant Corden also embarked on an attack course, with the TV host complaining about getting dirty.
Harry and Meghan will appear in a US prime-time television interview with Oprah Winfrey that is scheduled to air March 7th.
The couple are supposed to talk about their life in America.
