According to a new documentary about the couple, the relationship between Prince William and Kate Middleton got off to a somewhat uncomfortable start. The future Duke and Duchess of Cambridge met in 2001 at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, where they lived in the same dormitories and often had classes together, as Der Spiegel reports. But William's introduction to Kate was not as smooth as he hoped it would be. in fact it was kind of weird.
According to the royal memoir writer Tom Quinn, who spoke in the British documentary William & Kate: Too good to be true, the future duke came close to the ground when he first approached Kate. "One of the funny stories is that he was so desperate to meet her that when he walked up to her, he apparently stumbled and said, 'Oh, that's a terrible start, you'll think I'm a complete lump' "Quinn said. How quaint!
Obviously, Kate was still delighted by William - and he continued to impress her with his student kitchen, as People reports. Kate spoke to Mary Berry in her vacation special A Berry Royal Christmas and said, "In our college days he cooked all sorts of meals. I think he tried to impress me back then." And his dishes of choice? "Things like Bolognese sauce and things like that."
