Princess Charlotte gets a very snazzy title upgrade: Duchess of Edinburgh. And while the new title is a sweet homage to the Queen (more on that in a moment), it's also quite a snub to King Charles' brother Prince Edward - who was expected to take the title of Duke of Edinburgh after his father's Prince Philip inherits death.
But despite previous plans to bestow Edward the prestigious title (held by Her Majesty before ascending the throne), the Daily Mail reports that King Charles is preparing to bestow it on his granddaughter.

"Discussions are ongoing but the preferred outcome for the king is that this title should go to Princess Charlotte," a source said. "It would be a fitting way of remembering the Queen - who of course held the title Duchess of Edinburgh - and a way for His Majesty to honor the line of succession."

Another insider explained: "Charlotte's position is historically significant because she is the first female member of the royal family whose place in the line of succession is unrivaled by her younger brother. Therefore, it is constitutionally significant that Charlotte should be given such an equivalent title, because it is not out of the question that she might succeed to the throne if, for example, Prince George has no children."
The decision comes after months of speculation as to why Prince Edward wasn't awarded the title, and it seems he's less than thrilled. By that I mean a source "icy" close to the royal family who said the absence of the title "hasn't gone unnoticed."

Meanwhile, discussions are taking place in the old palace as to what title (if any) Prince Edward will be given instead. But he shouldn't get his hopes up, because the whole thing about King Charles is "promoting those in the immediate line of succession rather than those on the fringes" in order to have a stripped-down monarchy.
