Princess Diana's Marriage Into the Royal Family Wasn't All Prince Charles' Decision

Princess Diana was one of the most glamorous royals of all time, wowing the British people with her style and sincerity. We would have assumed Lady Di would have more than her fair share of suitors, but it seems that her future husband (who was also the future king, to be fair) took some persuasion to get on one knee - to the extent that a royal biographer suggests that this was the royal family's version of arranged marriage. Ingrid Seward, royal expert and author of Prince Philip Revealed, confirms that Philip pressured his son Prince Charles to propose to Diana once her publicity began. Unfortunately, the timing wasn't about romance, it was about the royal family wriggling at the idea of Charles pursuing the now-loved Diana and risking the wrath of the British people.
Seward went further in 1981 on the exchange between Philip and Charles, emphasizing the pressure of the media to get Diana out of the way.
"[Charles] told some of his friends that he felt pressured to marry Diana because Philip said," You either have to marry her or let her go. You can't get a ... young girl carried away. She is only 19 years old. You can't get her carried away, "Seward told Weekly." And all the press is saying, "Oh, this will be the next queen." You have to take a stand and say this won't work or you will marry her. "
Robert Lacey, author of the royal biography Battle of Brothers, wrote the same about Charles' suggestion and Philip's particular concern that Diana should not be sacrificed in his search for a wife.
"As press coverage increased, Prince Philip told his son in blunt intervention that Charles either had to propose to the girl or" leave immediately "for the sake of her good name," writes Lacey. “This is how marriages are“ arranged ”in the age of mass media scrutiny. Charles bowed to his father's "advice" and proposed Diana in early February 1981. "
Unfortunately, we all know how this story ends. Both of them continue to have affairs, split up, and ultimately divorce in a very public, very messy way - much to Philip's dismay, no doubt.
