Progressive Democrats call for Biden to overrule Senate parliamentarian on minimum wage

The House Democrats are redoubling efforts to raise the minimum wage to $ 15 and calling on the President to override Senate rules.
23 prominent democratic representatives, including MPs Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), Ilhan Omar (D-MI), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Ro Khanna (D-CA), asked Biden for a letter on Monday, To overturn the Senate MP's decision that the Senate cannot use the budget vote to pass the $ 15 minimum wage regulation.
"Eighty-one million people cast their ballots to vote you on a platform that called for a minimum wage of $ 15," the legislature wrote in a letter. "We urge you to keep this promise ... and keep the minimum wage of $ 15 in the US bailout."

Parliament passed a $ 1.9 trillion version of Biden's stimulus plan on Saturday that included the minimum wage provision, but the final version of the bill that the Senate will vote on will become the provision after the Senate's parliamentary decision probably not included last week.
"The outdated and complex Byrd rule, which is based on restricting progress, must not be an obstacle to improving people's lives," the legislature wrote. "You have the authority to raise salaries for millions of Americans."
The Byrd Rule restricts what can be included in the Senate's reconciliation legislation. Any provision must have budgetary implications for the federal government to qualify for the process.

"We cannot allow a parliamentary decision to stop a wage increase for Americans. I mean, the wage is 7.25 US dollars. Nobody can survive that," Khanna said in a press conference on Monday. "This is the moment. This is our moment to achieve this. ... We respectfully ask that you disregard the parliamentarian, allow this vote ... this is our moment to do something that is moral and just is. "
Tlaib added that "the people at home don't remember how it's done, they remember it was done."
"The will of the American people overwhelmingly says," This is what we need to do, especially during a pandemic, "Tlaib said.

"Not as risky as some people think"
Most Americans are in favor of raising the federal minimum wage, which was last raised in 2009.
Many cities and states have run their own treks, including Republican ones like Florida. While the federal minimum wage is $ 7.25, 20 states and D.C. currently a minimum wage of $ 10 or more. By 2022, three more states will have hourly wages above $ 10.
A minimum wage of $ 15 an hour would bring 23 million Americans a "direct wage increase," a boon to many amid the pandemic, according to a recent analysis by the UC Berkeley Center for Labor Research and Education.
"There is good evidence that this is bold policy, but not as risky as some people think," Michael Reich, an expert on minimum wages at the University of California at Berkeley, told Yahoo Finance in an earlier interview.
Goldman Sachs analysts also previously estimated that an increase to $ 15 an hour would affect around 30% of U.S. workers, most of whom have household incomes less than $ 50,000.
Critics of a $ 15 minimum wage, including most Republicans and some Democrats, generally argue that a large increase has no nuances and is bad for companies also dealing with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
"Everyone is trying to paint this whole thing with one big stroke of the brush," John Horne, owner of the Anna Maria Oyster Bar in Bradenton, Fla., Previously told Yahoo Finance. "$ 15 [minimum wage] is fine in Miami ... but not good in a small town."
While the $ 15 minimum wage may not be included in the final bill, Biden's legislation includes stimulus payments, expanding major unemployment programs due to expire in the spring, help for small businesses, $ 350 billion for state and local governments, an increase in tax credits for low- and middle-income families; and $ 160 billion for a national program of vaccinations and testing.
