Prominent Kentucky Dem backs Booker over McGrath in bid to oust McConnell
Former Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes approved Senate candidate Charles Booker in the Democratic primary on Tuesday to challenge Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell in November.
"I am proud to support my friend @ Booker4KY for the US Senate in Kentucky Democratic Elementary School! Let's choose a new generation of managers in KY together! # Booker4KY, ”Lundergan Grimes tweeted.
Lundergan Grimes, one of the most prominent Democrats in Kentucky, served two terms as Secretary of State and was himself a candidate for the Senate, who had unsuccessfully faced McConnell in his last re-election campaign in 2014.

Her support for Booker, a state representative, reinforces his insurgent primary campaign against Amy McGrath, the former fighter pilot who became a favorite of the Democratic Party during her failed bid for the House in 2018.
Booker's candidacy has gained momentum in recent weeks due to protests against racial injustice and police brutality in his hometown of Louisville, where Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old black woman, was fatally shot by the police in March.
Booker has also been supported by leading progressives, including Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) And Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), And has received recognition from the two largest newspapers in Kentucky.
The Democratic primary for the Kentucky Senate will take place on June 23.
