Raging COVID-19 Shuts All Miami Beaches For July 4th Weekend

All of the beaches in and around Miami will be closed throughout the vacation weekend of July 4th to protect people from the increasing cases of COVID-19, Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Giménez said late Friday .
Giménez said in a statement that he will sign an emergency order on Saturday that will close all of Miami-Dade County's beaches from July 3-7.
“As we continue to see more COVID-19 positive test results among young adults and increasing hospital stays, I decided that the only prudent thing to curb this recent surge is to take action against recreational activities that take our entire community to a higher level Risk, ”he said in the statement.
Giménez warned that the shutdown "can be extended if conditions don't improve and people don't follow the" new normal "rules" that face masks require in commercial settings - and outdoors if there is a social distance of at least 6 feet not possible.
“I've seen too many companies and people who ignored these life-saving rules. If people are not responsible and protect themselves and others from this pandemic, the government will be forced to intervene and restore common sense to save lives, ”he wrote.
Giménez will also ban parades and other gatherings of more than 50 people. People in smaller groups have to be masked and maintain social distance. Fireworks may only be viewed from home or from parked cars.
The emergency order comes as Florida's COVID-19 cases skyrocket. Both Florida and Texas have closed bars in the state as new cases of coronavirus break records.
Florida reported a record high of 8,942 new cases of coronavirus on Friday, surpassing the previous record of 5,508, which was set just two days earlier.
