Refugees face police violence at EU border

As winter rushes around cooking fires in Bosnia, refugees risk being beaten and humiliated by Croatian police in desperate hopes of a new life in the European Union. Most of them come from Afghanistan and have survived months or years of fleeing war and poverty only to be hit by Croatian police clubs and sharp rifles at the gates to EU territory. In a dilapidated camp near the north-west Bosnian border town of Velika Kladusa, a group of predominantly Afghans are hoping to get into the EU. Some have been on the road for years, others left when the Taliban overthrew the West-backed government in August.
