Regeneron CEO: Trump ‘is a case of one’ and ‘weakest evidence’ for Covid-19 treatment
Regeneron's chief executive Leonard Schleifer said Sunday that treating President Donald Trump with the company's experimental antibody cocktail was "a case of one," but stressed ongoing clinical trials have yet to show its effectiveness.
"The President's case is a case of you, and that's what we call a case report, and it's evidence of what happens, but it's the weakest evidence you can get," Schleifer said in an interview on CBS '" Face "the nation."
Schleifer added that there were "some very interesting aspects" in Trump's case, such as his age. He also noted that the president "had some risk factors" and that Trump "did not have his own immune system going when he was sick and he was" treated with Regeneron's treatment ".
He added that Trump's case is "perhaps the most analyzed case report of all time" but "only on the scale of evidence we really need".
He found that clinical trials are the standard for whether they're effective.
"The real evidence of how good a drug is and what it will do on average has to come from these large clinical trials, these randomized clinical trials that are the gold standard. And these are still ongoing," Schleifer said. "We have some preliminary evidence that we have spoken to the FDA and we will apply for an emergency permit as we currently believe it is appropriate."
Trump, who was hospitalized at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center after being diagnosed with coronavirus, was treated with the experimental antibody drug and touted as a "cure".
In a Sunday interview with Fox News host Maria Bartiromo, Trump said he had beaten Covid-19 and claimed immunity to the virus.
When asked by host Margaret Brennan on CBS whether Regeneron's drug creates immunity, Schleifer said, "It does."
"If you can get it in our vial, if you will, it will probably take months," said Schleifer.
