Rep. Denver Riggleman ousted in Virginia GOP convention
MP Denver Riggleman (R-Va.), Who was targeted by conservatives after a same-sex wedding last year, was ousted by GOP voters at a Drive-Thru district convention on Saturday.
The congress participants chose Bob Good, a former district leader who ran Riggleman's law, particularly on social issues, as the party's candidate for the general election. Good won the support of 58 percent of the delegates who voted on Saturday, said district GOP chairman Melvin Adams.
Good's victory came after a one-day convention in a church parking lot in central Virginia. He appeared as a staunch social conservative and advocated a traditional view of marriage. His support was to make English the official language of the United States and to terminate his or her birthright.
Riggleman condemned the convention, which was postponed because of the corona virus since spring of this year, as a corrupt process that disenfranchised district GOP voters. For security reasons, around 3,500 delegates were asked to drive in front of the church in Lynchburg to cast votes between 8:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
After the convention closed, but before the results were announced, Riggleman said his campaign had received non-specific reports of "voting irregularities" and "ballot papers".
"We are currently considering all of our options," Riggleman tweeted late Saturday evening.
In Virginia, district party committees can decide whether to select their candidates in the primaries or at congresses that are open to a much smaller number of voters.
The district, which stretches from Washington DC to the North Carolina border, leans towards Republicans. President Donald Trump won it with 11 points in 2016 and Riggleman beat his democratic opponent by 7 points in the medium term.
The House Democrats plan to contest the seat and will hold their own area code on June 23.
Riggleman is the third house to be rejected in 2020, along with representatives Dan Lipinski (D-Ill.) And Steve King (R-Iowa), who lost the primaries earlier this year.
