Ricky Schroder confronts Costco employee over mask requirement in viral video: 'You're just going to listen to their rules?'
It looks like actor Ricky Schroder will soon stop stocking up at Costco.
The TV star, who rose to fame on hit 1980s sitcom Silver Spoons and later NYPD Blue, took to social media Saturday to record his confrontation with a Los Angeles Costco employee about the California mask mandate.
"Boycott Costco until they behave like a free American company ... not (China)," wrote Schroder, who is now leaving Rick, the video with an emoji under the Chinese flag that was published on his Instagram page.
"What's your name and what are you doing here?" Schroder is heard asking a Costco employee who identifies himself as a manager named Jason.
When Schroder, who was not wearing a mask, asked why he wasn't allowed to enter the store, the employee cited mandates from the state of California and Los Angeles County, while Costco had not changed its current mask policy at every store location.
"Haven't you seen the news? Nationwide Costco said you don't have to wear masks," Schroder said, most likely referring to the letter Costco CEO Craig Jelenik posted on Friday announcing the company's change in face-covering policy some USA explained Costco locations. In response, the employee said to Schroder, "Actually, this is not correct. Costco always goes beyond the law, and the mandate in California has not changed."
In the letter, Jelenik stated that in Costco locations where the state or local jurisdiction does not have a mask mandate, fully vaccinated members and guests will be allowed entry into Costco without a face mask or face shield. Face-covering is still required at Costco locations where the state or local jurisdiction has a mask mandate.
Schroder continued to hire the employee, saying, "You will listen to these people? They have destroyed our economy. They are destroying our state. And you will just listen to their rules?"
Schroder turned on the camera and stated that he would "get my refund from Costco". He advised his followers to "give your membership to Costco until they remove it".
A manager soon left the shop and handed Schroder a receipt with his refund.
Yahoo Entertainment has asked Costco for a comment, but has not received one at the time of publication.
Schroder's confrontation at Costco isn't the first time the actor has made headlines recently. Back in November, it was revealed that Schroder had contributed a large sum of money to the release of Kyle Rittenhouse, the Illinois teenager charged with the murder of two people during a protest against the police shooting of Jacob Blake from prison, Yahoo reported Entertainment before.
The news came after attorney Lin Wood tweeted a photo of Rittenhouse along with John Pierce, then Schroder and Rittenhouse's attorney. "Free at last!!" wrote Wood. The tweet will no longer appear because the account is now locked.
It was later stated that Schroder's donation joined several other posts, including one from My Pillow CEO Mike Lindell.
"Ricky made a low six-figure donation to the #FightBack Foundation which, along with Mike Lindell's generous contribution, helped overdo the foundation to cover the $ 2 million bail," Pierce told Yahoo Entertainment.
Rittenhouse fired Pierce in February, the Milwaukee Journal reported to Sentinel.
Rittenhouse, who was 17 at the time of the shooting, was charged with premeditated first degree murder and reckless first degree murder in the deaths of two men who participated in a protest in August against the police shooting of Blake, Yahoo reported .
"Kyle's life is being destroyed. This is his freedom at risk. I was furious to see an innocent 17-year-old young man tried and found guilty," Schroder later told the New York Post. "It Made me angry. This boy is innocent and he will be found innocent. I did what every father should have done and that brings a kid out of prison who doesn't deserve to be there. "
