'Rings of Power' Season 2 is Already (!) Filming

When it comes to Rings of Power's next step, the question isn't, "Will Rings of Power have a second season?" but, "When will Rings of Power have a second season?" You see, according to the specifics of Prime Video's deal with the J.R.R. Tolkien Estate, the streamer could only acquire these adaptation rights by committing to five seasons of television. "They knew from the start that this was the size of the screen," said co-showrunner J.D. Payne on the property. "There are things in season one that don't really pay off until season five. We even know what our final shot of the final episode will be like."
Prime Video will be in the Rings of Power business for years to come - and with Season 1 over, viewers are already looking ahead to Season 2. Thankfully, filming for the eight-episode season just began this week in London. Read on to find out everything that's next for Rings of Power.
What could happen in Rings of Power season 2?
Only one detail is confirmed so far: Prime Video has announced that Círdan, one of the oldest and wisest of the elves, will be part of the story in the second season. Although the role has yet to be cast, Círdan plays an important role in the history of Middle-earth. During the Second Age, Círdan and his people founded the Gray Havens, where they built ships that took elves to the Undying Lands. Blessed with the gift of foresight, Círdan wore the elven ring Narya, fought alongside High King Gil-galad in the Last Alliance of Elves and Men, and ruled the Third and Fourth Ages over the Gray Havens.
Where else the story will lead, Tolkien's stories from the second age offer some clues. Payne and his co-showrunner Patrick McKay have explained that Rings of Power will follow four main arcs: the rise of Sauron, the forging of the rings, the fall of Númenor, and the final alliance of the elves and humans. The first season hinted at some of these storylines; Sauron is clearly on the rise, Celebrimbor dreams of it, and Queen Regent Míriel has foreseen Númenor's downfall. No doubt season two will take these stories to new heights.
When is Rings of Power season 2 coming out?
While no release date has yet been announced, it appears that Prime Video is speeding up production. "The production team is now working on season two," said Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios. “We will get this out into the world as soon as possible. We want to keep the time between seasons as short as possible, but we want to keep the bar just as high. So it will take what it takes. But there was an urgency to move fast, which is why these guys have been writing throughout their hiatus. We're moving fast.”
