'Rust' director 'gutted by the loss' of Halyna Hutchins after her death on the set of Alec Baldwin film

Souza was hit when Alec Baldwin fired a prop gun on the set on October 22nd.
Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally wounded and died of her injuries.
Director Joel Souza, who was hospitalized after filming Alec Baldwin's "Rust" on the set, broke his silence.
In a statement to Deadline, Souza expressed grief over the death of Halyna Hutchins, a camerawoman who was accidentally killed when Alec Baldwin, 42, fired a prop gun. It was reported that the prop was given to Baldwin by an assistant director who said it was not loaded with live rounds.
The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local 44 later said the prop gun included a live round.

"The loss of my friend and colleague Halyna makes me sad. She was friendly, lively, incredibly talented, fought for every inch and always pushed me to get better," Souza told Deadline.
"My thoughts go with her family at this most difficult time," said Souza, 48. "I am humble and grateful for the affection we have from our filmmaking community, the people of Santa Fe and the hundreds of strangers who came forward have received ..... It will certainly help my recovery. "
Insider has asked Souza representatives for a comment.
After filming, The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local 44 shared details about the incident.
"A live singles round was accidentally fired on set by the lead actor, meeting both Director of Photography, Local 600 member Halyna Hutchins, and director Joel Souza," said Anthony Pawluc, IATSE Local 44 union secretary, in the Email from IndieWire.
Hutchins was helicoptered to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Souza was hospitalized for his injuries and discharged on Friday.

Baldwin released a statement following the incident saying his "heart was broken".
"There are no words to express my shock and grief over the tragic accident in which Halyna Hutchins, a woman, mother and deeply admired colleague of ours, lost her life," wrote Baldwin on Twitter. "I am fully cooperating with the police investigation to clarify how this tragedy came about."
Baldwin added that he was in contact with Hutchins' husband and their family.
Hutchins' husband Matthew Hutchins said in a statement to Insider: "I don't think there are words to communicate the situation. I won't be able to properly comment on the facts or the process we're going through. " now, but I appreciate everyone's being very compassionate. "
He continued: "I think we will need a little more time before we can really embody your life in a communicable way."
A GoFundMe launched on Friday in honor of the late cameraman raised over $ 100,000.
Hollywood filmmakers have since called for the use of firearms blanks to be stopped, and Mare of Easttown director Craig Zobel called them "an unnecessary risk."
ABC's "The Rookie" and the showrunner of the Amazon series "The Boys" have committed to no longer using live guns during production.
