San Francisco 49ers QB Nick Mullens may need season-ending surgery

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Nick Mullens sustained a right elbow injury that could require surgery from Tommy John per head coach Kyle Shanahan at the end of the season.
Mullens is undoubtedly struggling this season, but he's also had to play a lot more than planned. Starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has dealt with two ankle sprains this season, forcing Mullens to play ten games and make eight starts in his absence. This season, Mullens has completed 64.7% of his passes for 2,437 yards and 12 touchdowns with 12 interceptions.
With starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo still in injured reserve and likely not ready for week 16, the 49ers will turn to third quarterback CJ Beathard for their upcoming showdown with the Arizona Cardinals.
Shanahan said the team will likely sign a quarterback from another team's training team to address the quarterback depth issue. Garoppolo's practice window is open but is unlikely to make a return against Arizona. Training team QB Josh Johnson also went on the COVID-19 list, leaving Beathard the only healthy quarterback in Week 16.
