Saudi man charged after he drove a Maserati down Rome's world-famous Spanish Steps, police say

A 37-year-old Saudi has been charged with causing serious damage to cultural heritage and monuments.
A Saudi national has been charged with causing serious damage to cultural heritage and monuments after driving a rented Maserati down Rome's famous Spanish Steps, local police said.
The 37-year-old was arrested at Milan's Malpensa Airport after police traced his identity using CCTV video and contacted the car rental company he used, Rome Police said on Facebook.
Surveillance footage shows a Maserati being driven through the pedestrianized Trinità dei Monti at the top of the Spanish Steps between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning. It seems to be one of Maserati's SUV models.

The footage shows the car descending the first flight stages before coming to a stop. Someone then appears to exit the vehicle to inspect the damage, footage shows, before completing the 135-step descent.
According to CNN, the car broke two steps, according to Rome's monument protection authority. The 16th and 29th stages of the right wing were damaged in the incident, the body said.
Some fragments have been temporarily reattached, the body said, but more work is needed to restore the 300-year-old steps.
"Widespread chipping, scratches, abrasions and debris on both second level ramps, attributable to the same event," were also discovered, the body said, per CNN.

Built in the 18th century, the Spanish Steps have become one of Rome's most famous landmarks.
You starred in the 1953 film Roman Holiday with Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck. They are also mentioned in F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel Tender Is the Night and Bob Dylan's When I Paint My Masterpiece.
The staircase underwent a major restoration in 2016 sponsored by luxury fashion house Bulgari.
