An illustrative video shows an armed man repeatedly shooting another man on a New York sidewalk while two children just inches away are desperately trying not to be hit.
The footage was released Friday by New York Police Department asking the public for tips about the two men involved in the 1551 Sheridan Avenue shooting in the Bronx. The children, a 5-year-old boy with his 10-year-old sister, were near their home when the incident occurred on Thursday, according to WABC-TV.
"Yes, these are children with the victim, who fortunately were not injured," said the department.
The 24-year-old victim was rushed to hospital with injuries after being beaten in the back and leg, an NYPD spokesman told Insider in a statement.
"They're going to shoot in front of the kids anytime every day. That's what became of it," said Rodney Harrison, NYPD director, NBC New York reported. "We need our cops out here and we need to make sure we use more cops, especially here in the Bronx. We see a lot of violence back and forth."
The search was carried out for the shooter and another man to help him get off the scene on a scooter.
"The first person is described as a man with sunglasses who wore completely black clothes," said the police. "The second person is a light-skinned man who wore a white baseball cap, red long-sleeved shirt, and dark shorts."
Gun violence in New York City has increased since last year amid the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, the record number of gun violence deaths also skyrocketed across the country.
As summer approaches and restrictions lift, law enforcement officials have raised concerns about the impending violence, according to the Associated Press.
