Sixers stars Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid react to James Harden trade rumors
The Philadelphia 76ers are preparing for what will hopefully be a much more successful 2020-21 season after a disappointing 2019-20 season in which they were defeated in Round 1 of the playoffs. With a new trainer in Doc Rivers and new shooters, the team is confident about their chances.
There has been a major distraction lately, however, and that has been the constant trade rumors that Ben Simmons and Houston Rockets superstar James Harden were involved in.
The Sixers seem firmly convinced they don't want to trade Simmons as team president Daryl Morey wants to see what the two can do under Rivers. However, ESPN's Brian Windhorst says Simmons is very available in a possible Harden deal.
As the season kicks off on Wednesday, Simmons spoke of his involvement in the rumors.
"I come in every day, taking it one day at a time, ready to work," said Simmons. "Every time I put on a Sixers uniform, I represent the Sixers. My mentality never changes. I'm here to win a championship. That will never change."
Simmons had his support so far. Morey has denied all reports that his Star Point Guard is commercially available, and Rivers even called Simmons to help him during this time. In addition, Joel Embiid added that the team did not care about these rumors.
"We're focused on how we can get better as a team," said Embiid. "We had a great opportunity to fight for the whole thing and that's what we're concentrating on. You can't control all the outside noise. You have to control what you can. We want to win the whole thing and that's what we're up to and we're pushing us too. "
The big guy is usually active on social media, but he doesn't do as much as he used to. He added that this was his first time hearing of these rumors about Simmons and Harden.
"I honestly haven't heard anything," said Embiid. “When I go to social media, I have everything to do with video games, especially FIFA. I don't use social media like I used to. I never go any further there unless I have to do something. "
Ultimately, for any basketball player, trade rumors are a part of that business. To get a superstar like Harden you have to give up the same worth and Simmons is a young star at the age of 24 who has a lot of worth in this league.
As a player, the outside noise will always be there. You just have to block everything that is easier said than done.
"I know things are always said in the media and rumors and things like that," Simmons concluded. "My goal is to come and get better every day and to help the team win a championship."
The Sixers will start the season at home against the Washington Wizards on Wednesday.
