SNL’s Hilarious Iceberg That Sank The Titanic Skit Is Required Viewing

Bowen Yang deserves an award for this achievement
The "Weekend Update" segment of Saturday Night Live is always one of my favorite parts, and last night's episode was one for the record books. Cast member Bowen Yang played the iceberg the Titanic hit in 1912 because he felt it was time to tell his side of the story - and his side of the story was hysterical.
The anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic is next week, and it's always a "really weird time of year" for a freshwater ice formation. Although Yang's iceberg tried to get past that fateful night, host Colin Jost didn't let go of it.
"First of all, you came to my workplace and hit me," said Yang, clearly annoyed that he had to lead everyone through the night again.
Apparently he was just "chilled" and heard that "Irish cacophony" behind him that came out of nowhere. Before he could even see what the riot was about, "half his ass was gone," which was apparently his best feature.
You can imagine the reactions on social media when people finally hear the other side of the story:
SNL writer Anna Drezen took to Twitter after the skit aired and said, “Real stupid joy to write this incredibly stupid, but with Bowen Yang, the Celine Dion of comedy. He delivers!!!"
The Celine Dion of Comedy. Bless.
During the sketch, Yang expressed how frustrated he was that no one cared about him that fateful night.
“First of all, they came across me. I said, "Oh, I'm sorry" which is crazy, and then there is all this screaming, "he explained in the most dramatic way possible.
Yang also said he was tired of being held responsible for those who perished. Instead, we should blame the water for, "You drowned, bitch. Nobody cancels the ocean."
Yang appeared on "Weekend Update" two weeks ago to urge viewers to "do more" after the surge in anti-Asian hate crimes hit the headlines. Being able to take up a serious subject and instill humor in it is a delicate task that pegs a Yang down week after week.
He spoke to NPR late last year about being with SNL during a pandemic year.
“I think SNL is such a solid, refractive prism. And whatever comes through is just whatever - it's just the absurdity of what's going on in the world, or what people say, or what isn't said. I think we all take it kind of seriously, ”he said. "And I think we're all in one place that we're excited to write."
In the end, Yang just wants everyone to come by the whole thing and show them that they have more to do with their story than just being “that iceberg”.
In fact, he introduced his new album, a new hyper-pop EDM disco fantasy called "Music," and got to share some lyrics from one of the songs, "Loverboy," which was just as fantastic.
After watching him kill the iceberg that sank the Titanic, it's safe to say that Bowen Yang is the next SNL star.
