Greg Daniels, the creator of the Space Force, is known for comedies like The Office and Parks and Recreation. The new Netflix series, however, presents a different kind of comedy that comes from the real, newly formed branch of the military. During Deadline's Contenders Television virtual event, Daniels said the idea came up when Steve Carell met with Blair Fetter of Netflix, who had just heard the government's announcement about Space Force. He suggested that as an idea for a show.
Carell called Daniels and said, "I have two words for you: Space Force," to which Daniels replied, "That sounds great!"

"We started putting up the character of General Mark Naird, who was responsible for bringing boots to the moon in 2024 - which is a super bold and implausible mission," said Daniels, adding that it would be really funny, man with an extensive military background to be seen beyond his skills in dealing with scientists, media and politicians
"The interesting thing was that we were so early that Netflix had the Twitter handle" @realspaceforce "," emphasizes Daniels.
Daniels on the Netflix panel included series stars John Malkovich, Ben Schwartz and Lisa Kudrow, all of whom were pulled into space force orbit.
“What impressed me is the range and style in which the characters are amusing because of their view of the world and their behavior - which is generally the wrong way to go regardless of the situation, but it's a very precise way. Said Malkovich.
"I thought the font Greg used was incredible," Schwartz jokes about what appealed to him about the script. "It was Greg Daniels - I looked up for some time." He went on to say, "I think what Greg does so well, what prevails on this show is that he's incredible at creating characters that ground the char and really let it expand and grow over the seasons."
Daniels spoke about the sound of the show and put the real space force in the spotlight. "We wanted to be respectful when we did, and it should be a" laugh with "show," he said. "Ultimately, this show is about characters of integrity trying to do something very bold."
In the series, Carells and Malkovich's characters come from two different worlds and are opposed at the beginning, but in the course of the series they rub each other off and eventually become friends. "This is the hopeful take away - maybe we're not divided as Americans as everyone thinks," said Daniels. "We can still do something cool when we work together."
Kudrow added, "When I got to the last episode, I was so comforted by the possibility that this show offers that you can have decent people in positions of power and decision that everything could be fine."
