Spain edge Swiss, Germany beat Ukraine in Nations League
Mikel Oyarzabal threw himself on a horror slip of the Swiss captain Granit Xhaka and secured a 1-0 victory for Spain in the Nations League on Saturday.
In the other League A game of Group 4 that night, Germany beat Ukraine 2-1 in Kiev.
At the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano in Madrid, where Real Madrid's second team usually plays, Real Sociedad striker Oyarzabal scored in the 14th minute.
The Swiss tried boldly to play from behind, but Xhaka slipped trying to collect the pass from goalkeeper Yann Sommer.
Mikel Merino lunged and threaded the ball to club colleague Oyarzabal, who finished well after the summer.
"I'm happy to have won and to add three points," Oyarzabal told Spanish television.
"We knew that (Switzerland) are a strong team, that they like to play a lot and that they have fewer points than they deserve.
"We also knew they were risking a lot from behind and we wanted to put pressure on them because we believed we could rob and injure them and that's how it worked."
In the 52nd minute, Oyarzabal had a unique opportunity to double his record.
Switzerland tried again to clear their lines and Jesus Navas fired a cross shot into the area that Sommer could only push down the Oyarzabal path.
However, the striker's exertion hit the post and went wide.
Then it was Merino's turn to take another chance. At the top of the hour a poorly cleared corner fell on his awkward right foot and he shot up and far in front of the gate.
Sergio Ramos then saw an attempt that was screened by Xhaka before a header went off with Spain in the driver's seat moments later.
Switzerland believed they had an equalizer when Xherdan Shaqiri spun and sent the ball spiraling into the Spanish net.
But it shouldn't be that the referee Atalantas handed Remo Freuler a yellow card for a foul on Sergio Busquets.
Then it was Gerard Moreno's turn to shoot high after a clever turn and turn in front of the Swiss goal after a nice ball from Sergio Canales.
- Unbeaten run extended -
Luis Enrique's team then contented themselves with watching the game, extending their currently undefeated run to 14. They also did not lose in 20 games from 1987 in Madrid.
"It wasn't an easy game, it wasn't a game we were particularly fluent in," said Enrique.
"We used the hard push to score the goal and then we had other opportunities to finish the game but with no luck."
The Spaniards are at the top of their group after starting a 1-1 draw with Germany before beating Ukraine 4-0 on Tuesday.
In Kiev, Germany took their first victory in the group of nations with a professional 2-1 away win against the Ukrainians.
Defender Matthias Ginter gave Germany the lead in the first half, then Leon Goretzka took advantage of a terrible mistake by the Ukrainian goalkeeper before Ruslan Malinovskyi converted a late penalty for the hosts.
National coach Joachim Löw said he was "satisfied" with the away win, but admitted that "we should have had three or four goals ahead of us before they scored a goal".
"In some phases we gave the ball away too easily."
After the draw in the Nations League against Spain and Switzerland, which Turkey played 3: 3 in a friendly on Wednesday, Germany finished second in the group behind Spain.
However, Germany can expect a much tougher task against the Swiss on Tuesday in Cologne and should have scored more goals after having owned around 75% against a weakened Ukrainian team.
In the other games of the evening, Luxembourg beat Cyprus 2-0 and Montenegro beat Azerbaijan in Group 1 of League C.
In League D, the Faroe Islands drew 1-1 with Latvia at home, and Andorra fought goalless against Malta in Group 1, while Gibraltar beat Liechtenstein 1-0 in Group 2.
