San Antonio Spurs forward Zach Collins was thrown out of Saturday night's 143-138 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers after hitting Russell Westbrook hard in the head, drawing blood and causing a brief altercation on the lane at the AT&T Center triggered.
Collins blocked Westbrook on the edge late in the third quarter of the game and hit him hard in the head - which sent Westbrook onto the court. Westbrook then immediately jumped up and charged Collins. Before he could do much, however, LeBron grabbed James Westbrook and restrained him.
Westbrook had blood running down his face as he walked back to the Lakers bench.
After a check, Collins was hit with a flagrant 2 foul and ejected. Westbrook received a technical foul and left the game after shooting free throws for the dressing room.
"I shouldn't have jumped on the pump fake, but I did," Collins said of San Antonio Express News' Tom Orsborn. So I was just trying to get down and smack his arm so the ball didn't go to the edge... Unfortunately my elbow just hit his head and he started bleeding and it looked awful but I honestly wasn't trying anything . I just didn't want him to fire a shot.
Collins ended his night with 12 points and eight rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench. Westbrook later returned to the bench from the dressing room and checked back into the game. The team said the cut on his head did not require stitches. He finished the night with 11 points, eight rebounds and six assists in 27 minutes.
James led the Lakers to the win with 39 points and 11 rebounds while shooting 7 of 12 from behind the arc. The win was the fifth in six games for the Lakers and their second straight win over San Antonio.
"He's shooting in the head, and you don't want to escalate the situation," Lakers coach Darvin Ham said via Spectrum SportsNet. "They want to try and calm him down, you've got a guy with blood on his face who's understandably upset. Just having 'Bron' there shows a brotherhood that we need that kind of image, that action, that belief in each other, we need that to represent ourselves as a team and as a franchise."
