Sri Lanka plunged into a deep crisis today (9 July) triggered by an economic collapse. It was a chaotic day as President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled his official residence in the country's capital, Colombo, as hundreds of thousands of protesters stormed the presidential palace. In the evening, the private residence of Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe was set on fire by some of the demonstrators.
