Steve Yzerman: Detroit Red Wings will have captain in 2021 season
The Detroit Red Wings have not yet decided how to give the occasion the recognition it deserves, but plans to have a captain for the first time in nearly three years.
General Manager Steve Yzerman, named captain at a press conference, wants someone - think Dylan Larkin - to wear the "C" during the 56-game season shortened by the pandemic. The Henings have relied exclusively on alternative captains since Henrik Zetterberg's resignation in September 2018.

"We haven't figured out how to do that, but our plan hasn't changed," said Yzerman.
This was one of the many topics Yzerman discussed with the media during a half-hour Zoom meeting on Tuesday afternoon, two days after the NHL officially announced plans for a 56-game season.
Detroit Red Wings Center's Dylan Larkin (71) looks on in the first round against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Little Caesars Arena on April 2, 2019 in Detroit.
Here are the highlights.
European through Christmas holidays
The Wings have loaned several players to European teams, and some, like Filip Zadina and Michael Rasmussen, have already returned to Detroit. Yzerman said Gustav Lindstrom and Mathias Brome will be called back. Moritz Seider and Joe Veleno can only be recalled from their Swedish Hockey League teams after their season has ended. Players in the Detroit metropolitan area have been competing in the Little Caesars Arena since early December.
The wings can officially start training camp on December 31st.

The season is expected to start on January 13th. The NHL hasn't released a schedule yet, but the Wings will play eight games each against the Carolina Hurricanes, Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Dallas Stars, Florida Panthers, Nashville Predators and Lightning in the temporarily realigned Central Division.
Yzerman previewed the schedule and said there will be 10 games in 18 days in January. That should get the guys in shape quickly as there are no exhibition games.
THE FUTURE: Filip Hronek and Moritz Seider prove that they are ready for bigger NHL roles
With no fans in the stands - which affects not only ticket sales but also the concessions in the arena - the NHL is trying to allow advertising on players' uniforms to offset financial losses.
"I think it's a good opportunity to see if we can get any revenue from it," said Yzerman. "Outside of North America, this is the norm."
You turn blue
Yzerman wore a Red Wings Michigan college night baseball hat that had an M block on it. "It's about as close as I could ever be accepted at the University of Michigan," joked Yzerman.
