Swimmers Sent Home Early From Tokyo After Olympic-Sized Error By National Federation
Six swimmers selected to represent Poland at the Tokyo Olympics returned home early from Japan after their country's national federation accidentally selected too many athletes.
The Polish Swimming Federation has selected 23 swimmers to compete in the games delayed by the coronavirus pandemic, which officially begin on Friday. But only 17 were actually eligible under the qualifying standards, reported several media outlets.
"Imagine, you devote five years of your life and strive for another start at the most important sporting event, give up your private life and your work, sacrifice your family and your commitment leads to a total flop", the two-time Olympian Alicja Tchorz, one of sent the swimmers home, wrote on Facebook.
"I am deeply shocked by what happened," wrote Mateusz Chowaniec, who was also sent back to Poland, on Instagram. “For me this is an absurd situation that should never have happened. In fact, I hope to wake up from this nightmare at some point. "
Bartosz Piszczorowicz, Aleksandra Polańska, Dominika Kossakowska and Jan Hołub have also been removed from the team, SwimSwam.com reported.
The swimmers signed an open letter asking the board of the Polish Swimming Federation to resign.
Association President Pawel Slominski apologized for the mistake, claiming that the association wanted "as many players and coaches as possible to take part in the games".
"I express great regret, sadness and bitterness about the situation," Slominski said in a statement. "Such a situation must not take place, and the reaction of the swimmers, their emotions, the attack on the Polish swimming federation is understandable and justified for me."
