Taika Waititi admits to stealing equipment from 'The Hobbit' set to use for 'What We Do in the Shadows'
New Zealand filmmaker and actor Taika Waititi appeared on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Wednesday night, where he revealed a hobbit-sized secret about the second film in director Peter Jackson's popular film series.
Waititi shared, "When I was shooting 'What We Do in the Shadows', when Jermaine and I were shooting that, we didn't have a lot of money to do that film and 'The Hobbit' had just finished, I don't know if I should tell. OK, but I'll do it. Our production designer brought his crew into The Hobbit Studios in the middle of the night and stole all the dismantled broken green screens and took all the lumber and we built a house."
Waititi admitted that the house in his 2014 film What We Do in the Shadows was built from the Hobbit's wood and green canvas. There was roughly a $200 million budget difference between Waititi's What We Do in the Shadows and Jackson's second Hobbit film, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013), which Waititi pointed out was already completed, and Jackson probably didn't care. Although, according to the director of Thor: Love and Thunder, Jackson probably doesn't know either.
"I never spoke to Peter Jackson about it. I don't know if he knows. I like to tell it at parties, this story. But I don't know if he really knows," admitted Waititi.
The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weekdays at 11:35 p.m. on CBS.
Watch Kim Kardashian interrupt her 'Tonight Show' interview to reprimand her kids:
Kim Kardashian's 'Tonight Show' interview is interrupted by her kids
On Tuesday's Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fall, Kim Kardashian stopped by to promote her new skincare line, SKKN BY KIM. However, during her interview, there were a few viewers who were a little extra loud. Kardashian's two sons, Saint and Psalm West, sat in the audience and made such loud noises that even Fallon was distracted. "I hear kids," Jimmy Fallon pointed out. At that moment, Kardashian turned her head and yelled at her sons, "Guys, can you guys stop? This is sort of your first time working with me. While the audience laughed and "aww-ed" at her two adorable sons watching their mother at work, Kardashian wasn't as entertained. Earlier in the day, a clip was shared on social media of Kardashian having to berate her eldest son Saint for misconduct on her Instagram Live, which the video said was filmed either on her way to 30 Rock or after the show. It's likely that the boys were a little bored and restless all day following their mother's work. However, while Saint was the one who got into trouble in the car, Psalm had to be taken away after Kardashian had to interrupt her interview to berate him a second time. "Guys, seriously. You have to, you have to go," Kardashian yelled at her sons before Psalm was thrown away.
