Tamera Mowry Still Wants to Pursue a Music Career: "I Want to Sing So Badly"
From Oprah Magazine
Tamera Mowry-Housley may have achieved one of the rarest accomplishments in Hollywood: the ability to constantly evolve. Ever since she walked into our living room in 1994 as the teen star of sister, sister to twin Tia Mowry, the actress has always seemed to find a way to constantly reinvent herself. With Tia, she has starred in several hit TV shows (including a reality show about their relationship) and films (such as popular cult classics Double Wedding and Twitches). And solo, she co-hosted the daily hit talk show The Real for seven years.
Now she is taking over the escape world of the Hallmark vacation films, producing and playing in A Christmas Miracle and the upcoming Christmas Comes Twice in 2019. And in between, Mowry-Housley found time to become the mother of her son Aden, 7, and daughter Ariah, 5, whom she shares with her journalistic husband, Adam Housley. The couple often captures their family on their YouTube channel, The Housley Life ... that is, when they're not busy running their winery, Housley's Century Oak Winery in Napa Valley.
The girl clearly has a full plate. But after Sister, Sister recently gained a whole new audience when it hit Netflix - including the episode where she memorably took out Mary J. Blige's "I'm Going Down" - and the internet had another big question for Tamera: Will she ever chase one? Singing career?
While Tamera was quarantined in Canada prior to filming Christmas Comes Twice, she spoke to me on an Instagram Live for Oprah Magazine about her musical ambitions, the possibility of a Twitch 3, and how she's staying in touch with her sister Tia. Before World Mental Health Day, she also shared the surprising secret of how she puts her mental health first these days: Zumba.
See or read the full interview below.
So first and foremost: How are you and your family?
I am great. I feel really good I am currently quarantined in Canada for making a Hallmark movie. I had to fly in and quarantine for two weeks. I'm day 11 and I'm losing it easily, but I'm fine! I obviously miss my family, especially after being with them for about six months. I say being with them rejuvenated me even though you have some really stressful moments, especially as a parent with two kids under 10. Practically school - this practical school situation - I have to give the teachers. It was a lot.
But what I love about Hallmark films is that they make their films very quickly. So I can do what I want to do that I'm passionate about, but then I can go home and be with my loved ones.
I love a Hallmark movie. It just gives you all the emotional goods.
I'm a producer on this film - I was also a producer on Christmas Miracle. And this ... it's called Christmas comes twice. It's about this woman - and I actually derived the character from Loni (Love, Mowry's former co-host on The Real). Loni was in STEM, she was an engineer. But this figure is actually an astrophysicist. I wanted her to be in science. I think it's important to show that women are smart in STEM, but they can be stylish and romantic.
Basically, it's about her taking time for granted, and I feel like a lot of people have realized that about the pandemic. We have no control over the future. It's a bit magical - she actually takes her back to a time when she got a second chance in life. She wanted to go back in time to change everything, but she realizes that focusing on things that are right in front of her isn't that easy. I'm sure you will understand because Oprah is saying that all the time too ... Maybe you can't change a situation, but you can change your perception in that situation. Since I'm in quarantine, I can't wait to jump out and be on the set. And I love Christmas, everyone knows that. I am obsessed with Christmas!
Look, we need such happy films. You have been quarantined with children and your various projects and are now filming. How do you take care of your own mental health?
As I got older I realized the importance of just taking care of yourself physically. During the pandemic, there were more days than ever when I was scared. There were days when I was depressed. There were days when I felt overwhelmed, which is why I turned to the sport. Obviously prayer, faith, meditation ... but I made a point of having some time to myself. Self care is very important; Self-care is not selfish. I think it's great that I have a husband who realizes that this is also important. If we take care of ourselves ... you are a better friend, you are a better mother, you are a better woman.
The way I did this was through practice. I've lost about 16 pounds. My choice is to make a difference and find what you enjoy doing. Zumba has been a part of my life for years. Zumba helped me get in shape for my wedding. Zumba helped me get my snap back after having Aden and Ariah. And look, I'm guilty - I'll say that - of doing the fad diets and doing things to lose weight quickly. However, I realized that it was not sustainable for me and my life. But movement is.
What I love about Zumba is that it's not strenuous, it's fun. It's a sneaky workout! You don't even realize you've burned that many calories. But most importantly, after you've got all those endorphins - you realize whoa, I've just had a workout and I actually feel happy. You smile as you do it, and you can do it virtually. A lot of people are training that way.
I think self care is a gift to you. And as women - and especially as a mother - you always want to take care of other people and then neglect yourself. What I tell my friends, what I tell my managers and my family, is that I have an hour a day to go to exercise. If I can't do it every day that's fine, but if you want to do it just give yourself this hour and you will be so grateful that you did it. After exercising, you will actually feel energized and clear in your head.
Someone in the comments just said, "I'm putting my cookies down." You can still have the cookie girl!
You still can! I will tell you this. I lost the weight, as I said, without going on a fad diet. I haven't neglected myself with certain foods. I refuse to tell myself - because I'm a foodie - that I have bad food. God made food, it's not bad! Just make sure you get it balanced while eating. My day is friday like a fr-yay. So on Friday I'm looking forward to pancakes and bacon or hamburgers and fries or pizza. You can't escape the delicious food. Because if you do that for a month, you will go insane the other month and then ruin all the hard work. It works for me. "
I love it. Okay, I have to mention, sister, sister has seen this resurgence lately. How was it for you to revisit some of those moments?
A lot of people have said for years, "We want to see sister, sister streaming." And just to answer any questions, the reason it doesn't show on Disney + is because it wasn't originally a Disney show. We were owned by Paramount. So Disney + couldn't air it. Netflix has it now, and it was a huge hit when it premiered.
My sister and I, we texted each other, we said, "Holy crap, this is crazy!" I feel the word that comes to mind is: I am grateful. And I'm just in awe because it's like a classic in the sense that it doesn't feel dated. But I look at the outfits and I'm like oh my god! But I have a lot of friends who have kids and they say, "Can you please just make a video for my daughter, she's killing me. She's your biggest fan. She loves sister, sister. My kids are shocked that me." you know. Blah, blah blah. "
Although it makes me feel old, it makes me feel good. I went to the doctor's office the other day and there was this girl, she looked like a teenager. She was on her iPad and was literally fixed. And I heard "Sister, Sister ... never knew how much I missed you." I said, "Sorry, see sister, sister?" She obviously had her mask on, but I took mine off for now, we were six feet apart. I said, "I'm Tamera. Thank you very much." She looked at me like I had three heads. She moved in slow motion. It was so cute It's stupid. "
On your Instagram you recently recreated the legendary moment of sister, sister of your singing "I'm going down". Is music something that you will be following on a larger scale?
That's the thing. I want to sing so badly. I want to do a Christmas album, an inspiring album. I grew up with the gospel. My mother, at some point that was the only thing you could hear. Adrienne [Houghton, her former co-host on The Real] and I have that in common. We grew up in Pentecostal households where you could only hear gospel music. And they would say, "You can't hear this worldly music." You know that I am a woman of faith. And I'll sit there in my shower in the morning, in my room in the evening, and I'll just sing.
It's just time. It's funny because the moment I always like, "I'm taking a break, I don't want to do anything for a year ..." And then ... now I'm in Canada. So my thing is, I just have to find the time. I don't want to just throw that away. I want it to be my baby I want it to be the only thing I focus on, and I know that if it's in the cards, God offers the opportunity for me to do it. But I'm so blessed to be able to produce right now, I'm back to acting. I'm just so honored that Hallmark allows me to.
We are waiting for the movie, we are waiting for the album, we are waiting for Twitches 3 ...
I want to make a Twitches 3 so bad! Tia wants to do one too. We want to work together, it just has to be - again ... whoa, Tia and I haven't worked together since 2009 I think. No, no, we did the reality show. We did a reality show, I forgot oh my god!
My sister and I would watch this show and we would say, "We just fight like that! And we'll make it up!"
That's it. My sister and I are both very passionate people and we love each other. We love each other so much that you just want the other to understand where you are from. But we always make up for ourselves, that's the thing. Family is family. The family will be there for you when no one else is around. She is my ride or die. If something is wrong, the girl says, "Oh my god, is everything okay, do you need anything?"

I love it. Before you go, people want to know: What are your skin care secrets? Please tell us. They age backwards.
Thank you, that's so nice. That's the key. Take care of your skin, don't wait until you're 40, 50 or 60 to say, "Oh ok, I'm getting older, I'm going to start taking care of myself." Take care of your skin as young as 19, 20, as young as you want. It's okay.
My thing is to drink lots of water. And ok, that will sound cliché, but it's true. I take care of myself inside what my mind means. So often people say, "Well, you shine from within." That's because I want to make sure all of this is correct. It's right in my relationships, it's right in the righteous life. It is right in my relationship with God. And then drink plenty of water outside. Diet is important. And that's a big deal, I have an amazing facial doctor. Her name is Shani Darden. And she's awesome. It's okay to give yourself a treat, so get yourself a facial every now and then!
